I was looking for a bag that was small (and normal looking) enough to serve as a 'regular' backpack, but had the comfort, durability, and capacity of a trail-specific bag. This traverse 30 fits that bill. I've used it on single-night backpacking trips, a 3-night bike-packing trek, and for all sorts of errands around town.Rei Traverse 28
What I like about it is that can comfortably hold my tent, pad, sleeping bag, cycling gear, sleeping clothes, and some food. It takes creative packing and small/light gear, but it can be done! After three long days on my shoulders, the bag didn't get too uncomfortable. I also like that this bag appears to be a 'normal' backpack and it is professional enough for me to bring to work.
There are four small loops on the front of the pack, these work perfectly for storing my bike's U-lock, and I occasionally criss-cross some cord through to bind extra or larger gear externally.
As far as some things that aren't perfect, it does get a little warm against my back in the humid Minnesota summers - but most any bag would. There is a water-reservoir pouch, but uses it will take up a bit of bag storage. My only other complaint is that the side-pocket water bottle holders limit what can be put there. They perfectly and securely fit the 32oz. Nalgene style, but smaller bottles fall out and larger bottles (I have a 48oz Nalgene) don't fit well at all.
Bottom line: this is a great bag for its versatility and simplicity. I'd give it 5 stars, but it isn't 'perfect.' (Is anything?) Highly recommended!
